The first snow has fallen in Switzerland and the skiing season begins. The country is dominated by majestic mountain peaks, adding dramatic beauty to the landscape.
Here are the Switzerland Travel Centre’s top three mountains with ski slopes:
Schilthorn – The James Bond mountain
Used as a film set for “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” the Schilthorn’s steep slopes and long downhill runs are the Bernese Oberland’s highest altitude skiing area! At 2,970m high, soak up the breath-taking panorama of the Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau from its peak.
For those really experienced skiers, adrenaline is guaranteed on the piste number 10. With a slope of 75%, it is the steepest piste in the Jungfrau region. The descent starts at the Schilthorn summit and leads towards Engetal – the ultimate winter kick.
Mount Titlis – Year-round winter wonderland
Take the world’s first revolving cable car to the top with 360 degrees panoramic views. Boasting an altitude of 3,020 metres and over 80 kilometres of pistes, this mountain is perfect for skiers. Snow is guaranteed from December through until April and skiing is possible up on the glacier from October through until May.
The mountain’s longest down-hill run covers more than 12 km at an altitude of 2,000 metres. For thrill-seekers there are numerous red and black runs sure to get your adrenaline pumping. The lower lying slopes around Trübsee and Gerschnialp are great for beginners, children and families.
Mount Rigi – Queen of the Mountains
Skiing has a long tradition on Mount Rigi. The first ski lessons in Switzerland were taught here. Today there are four ski lifts and slopes ranging from easy to medium-hard. Thanks to their south-facing location the slopes are wonderfully sunny so remember to pack your sun cream! And of course the views from the top are beautiful, all adding to the Rigi skiing experience.
