It’s that time of year again! But this period of gift-giving has become a time for ‘self-gifting’ according to new research – and Sarah Beeny has been preparing her Christmas wish list ready for just that…
A study, commissioned by Barclaycard Cashback, has revealed that the new gift-buying trend amongst us Brits is to buy presents for yours truly, with the average self-gifting sum standing at £280 a year. Despite the recession, more than four in ten of us plan to ‘treat ourselves’ (although this is not necessarily out of indulgence, with 23% not trusting their friends and family to buy them the right presents).
This tendency for personal-present-buying doesn’t look set to stop with the festivities either: with more than one in ten people planning to increase the amount they spend on gifts for themselves over the next year. This said, not everyone will be ramping up present-buying this Christmas, with many families (nearly one in four) expecting to reduce their gifts spend this year due to the economic climate.
Some of the most popular self-gifted items include clothing and footwear, TVs and music equipment (iPads, laptops and the like) and alcohol and tobacco. But unsurprisingly, the property guru and at home guest editor, Sarah Beeny’s perfect presents include plenty of home-based gifts:

2. A gorgeous Persian rug (www.rugstore-ne.co.uk)
3. A decadent double sun lounger from Akula Living
4. A new DeWalt hammer drill DeWalt
5. Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Boots
